Privacy

This website belongs to Michelle MacKinnon, a painter in Nova Scotia. It collects only what it needs to answer your messages and send you what you buy. It does not use cookies, it does not track you with analytics, and it never sells or shares your information for marketing. When you fill in a form, a spam check from Cloudflare runs in your browser; see below.

When you send a message

The contact page and the inquiry form on each painting ask for your name, your email address and your message, and a subject or the painting you are asking about. We keep these so we can answer you. Each message is also emailed to our studio inbox.

To stop spam, the site keeps a scrambled, one-way code made from your internet address for 15 minutes after you send a message or join the mailing list. The code cannot be turned back into the address, and the site does not store the address itself.

Each message also passes a spam check called Turnstile, from Cloudflare. It starts only when you begin filling in a form, so browsing the site never contacts Cloudflare. While it runs, Cloudflare receives your internet address and technical details about your browser, and stores one small value in your browser under Cloudflare's own address. Usually you see nothing; now and then it asks you to tick a box. We send Cloudflare your internet address again when we confirm the check, and never your name, email address or message.

When you buy something

Payment happens on Square's secure checkout page. Your card details go to Square and never reach this website.

When the payment goes through, Square sends us your name, email address, phone number and shipping address. We keep them with a record of what you bought, so we can ship your order and contact you about it. An order notice with the same details is emailed to our studio inbox.

We use your email address to send you a receipt for your order, and to tell you when it ships if Michelle chooses to. We send nothing else to it.

Your cart is kept in your own browser until you check out. It is not sent to us before then.

How long we keep it

Twenty-four months. After that, the website deletes your messages automatically. On an order, it clears your name, email address, phone number, street address, town and postal code. We keep what was bought, the price, the date, and the province and country it went to, as our record of sales.

Who else sees it

• Square processes your payment under its own privacy policy.
• Cloudflare runs the spam check on our forms, under its Turnstile privacy addendum. It uses what it receives only to tell people from automated spam.
• Our web host stores this website and our email. Like most hosts, it keeps standard server records of visits, such as internet addresses and browser types, to keep the site running and secure.
• The shipping carrier sees the name and address on your parcel.
• Google Fonts supplies the lettering on these pages, so your browser asks Google's servers for it.

No one else receives your information from us.

Your choices

You can ask us what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it sooner. Write to inquiries@michellemackinnon.com and we will answer within 30 days.
